#59: Saigon Market

Hello and welcome to this very special photoblog where I took photos of my family’s Asian grocery store. They first opened their little shop in October of 1991. After a long 32 long years, we finally closed its doors in November 2023.

Things I want to remember forever:

  • my grandma cooking lunch everyday and calling out “sik faan!” (it means ‘eat rice’ in Cantonese) to let us and all the employees know food was ready

  • climbing the rice sacks

  • the smell of fresh bakery

  • writing on cakes

  • writing out price signs

  • the way my family treated all customers with kindness

  • drawing on the walls in the office with my sister

  • cooking che (Vietnamese dessert) with my mother

  • working alongside my family

For history about Saigon Market, check out Tasty Chomp’s blog where my sister, Teresa Ly, spoke about it perfectly.

Taking photos of the shop had me emotional, but I couldn’t be happier for my family finally getting the rest they deserve after all these years. <3 Please enjoy.
